Will Deion Sanders leave Colorado? Buffaloes coach interested in Raiders head coach opening, per reports image

Deion Sanders has been among the most captivating figures in football, first as a player and now as a coach. His boisterous personality and flare for the dramatic have led to plenty of headlines and viral moments surrounding the current Colorado head coach.

While his off-the-field engagements often take the spotlight, let’s not forget the success he’s had at the helm. After taking over at Jackson State and leading the team to 11- and 12-win seasons, Sanders decided it was time to head to a power conference, accepting the head coaching job at Colorado ahead of the 2023 season.

In his two seasons with the Buffaloes, Sanders has continued his success, leading the team to a combined record of 13-12 while cracking the AP Top 25 in both seasons. In 2024, Sanders and Colorado capped off the season with an appearance in the Alamo Bowl, the program’s third bowl game in the last 17 seasons.

After spending five seasons in the collegiate ranks, Sanders may be interested in climbing the ladder once again, this time setting his sights on the NFL. With the NFL coaching carousel spinning, Sanders has been discussed in relation to the opening in Las Vegas.

Deion Sanders NFL coaching rumors: Buffaloes head coach tied to Raiders opening

Over the last few months, Sanders’ name has floated around multiple head coach openings. Amid the Cowboys’ midseason losing streak, some brought up Sanders as a potential replacement for Mike McCarthy given Sanders’ storied history with the team, though McCarthy has so far stayed put in Dallas.

More recently, there has been buzz around Sanders potentially joining the Las Vegas Raiders. The organization has recently cleaned house, relieving head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco of their duties.

In a Jan. 11 report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sanders is interested in the opening. “He has a very strong interest in the job,” according to a source that is close to the situation.

As of now, the Raiders have made no formal announcement as to whether they plan to interview Sanders, but it wouldn’t come as a shock if he pops up on the shortlist of potential candidates.

Will the Raiders draft Shedeur Sanders?

Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, Deion’s son and former Buffaloes quarterback, Sheduer Sanders, is among the most highly-touted prospects. Sanders finished his senior season eighth in Heisman voting and is projected to be one of the first quarterbacks taken off the board in April.

Down the stretch of the NFL season, the love between the Sanders and the Raiders has appeared to be mutual. In a social media post in early December, Sanders was passing by Allegiant Stadium, home of the Raiders, and captioned the video, “Legendary.”

The biggest obstacle for the Raiders in their pursuit of Sanders is their draft slot. After contending for the No. 1 pick throughout the season, Las Vegas tumbled down the draft order in the final weeks of the year, ultimately ending up with the No. 6 pick.

There’s a possibility that Sanders is available in this spot, but given the ever-lasting need for quarterback talent in the NFL, it’s consider a long shot that Las Vegas lands him with the 6th pick. The Raiders’ future GM may have to make a move on draft day to acquire the Colorado signal caller.
