Carson Jones has passed away aged 38 after complications from his oesophagus surgery, fellow boxer Caleb Truax has revealed.

Jones had been sharing updates on social media in his final months on his gastrointestinal problems, sometimes eating and drinking nothing throughout a day and losing 35lbs in just a few weeks. In January, he revealed he was suffering from achalasia, a rare swallowing disorder.

He shared his relief that he would undergo surgery on his oesophagus on a post on February 19. But Truax revealed that Jones had been struggling while recovering and suffering with “complications during a surgical procedure” before sharing that he tragically died on Saturday morning.

Truax tweeted: “Rest in paradise to my man. Boxing lost a good one today,” while posting a picture of he and Jones after a sparring session.

Boxing promoter and manager Sam Jones added: “Such sad news about Carson Jones,” while British referee Mark Lyson said: “Very sad to hear the news about the passing of Carson Jones at just 38. RIP Champ.”

Jones had an impressive boxing career winning 40 of his 56 bouts as a professional, while having two memorable bouts against British star Kell Brook.

Brook, who defeated Jones on points and then by a stoppage in their second bout, shared a post on his Instagram story from another outlet that stated: “Sad news to the boxing world today, Carson jones passed away. He was a true veteran to the sport with over 60 pro fights. His fights against @specialkellbrook really put kel on the map.”

He later wrote: “This man was a true warrior and it was a pleasure sharing the boxing ring with him. My heart goes out to the Jones family RIP my beautiful brother.”

Jones fought Kell Brook twice

As well as his bouts against Brook, Jones also had a memorable fight with Mexico’s former two-weight world champion Antonio Margarito back in 2017 after the fight ended controversially. The fight ended in the seventh-round after an accidental head clash saw Margarito unable to see out of his left eye, before the Mexican was given the decision in a fight that many believed Jones to be winning.

Jones’ last fight came in 2023, when he defeated James Warren inside two rounds before being sidelined while struggling with gastrointestinal issues.

Jones had been regular training partners for some of the biggest names in the sport, including Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Shane Mosley.
