The child’s parents have both been detained after their toddler was seen by neighbors ‘running near a busy street’
The parents of a two-year-old girl have been arrested after she was found “running near a busy street” in Bexar County, Texas, wearing only a soiled diaper, according to police.
The Bexar County Sheriffs Office said they were called to a street on Sunday after residents reported seeing a child “running near a busy street before entering a nearby residence.” Authorities found the child sitting on the sidewalk.
“She appeared extremely dirty, unkempt, and was wearing a heavily soiled diaper,” the Sheriff’s office said.
Deputies entered the home where they discovered “filthy hoarding conditions.”
Authorities said the girl’s parents, Alexandrea Prewett, 33, and Benito Lopez, 35, were detained and are facing charges after the “horrific” discovery.
“Medical personnel evaluated the child, and EMS transported her to a nearby hospital for precautionary medical care,” the Sheriff’s office said.
A report also noted: “Investigators detect an overpowering odor of urine and animal feces. Piles of trash are observed throughout the living room and kitchen areas.”
“In the kitchen rotting food, trash and dead cockroaches are found on countertops and floors. Conditions inside the home deemed horrific.”
Prewitt confirmed to officers that she was the mother of the two-year-old girl and was detained along with Lopez who later returned to the property. They are facing charges of child endangerment and have been released on bail.
Alarmingly, the sheriff’s department revealed they’ve had multiple reports recently of youngsters “roaming from their homes without supervision.”
“In recent weeks, BCSO has responded to several calls involving young children wandering from their homes unnoticed. While not every case results in an arrest, each is thoroughly investigated, and arrests will be made when warranted,” the Sheriff’s Office statement said.
“This incident serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to ensure proper child safety measures are in place to prevent such dangerous situations. Thankfully, this child was located safely and did not suffer injuries while wandering in the street.”
