A notorious pedophile has agreed to undergo castration in a shocking plea deal after he was apprehended attempting to sexually assault a seven year old girl.
Thomas Allen McCartney, 37, is classified as a “Tier Three” offender and is considered one of Louisiana’s most dangerous child predators.
In an unprecedented move, McCartney consented to both physical and chemical castration as part of his plea deal on Tuesday, in an effort to lessen his prison sentence – although he will still serve 40 years behind bars, according to local station Fox 12. The news comes as a possible sighting of missing California baby Emmanuel Caro has been made as desperate search continues.
Louisiana is the only state that permits surgical castration as a punishment for sex crimes.
This law was only enacted at the start of August – and this case is likely one of the first times it’s been applied by a court, reports the Express.
Since 2008, the southern state has allowed chemical castration as a penalty for certain sex crimes.
In extreme cases of sexual abuse, Louisiana judges can offer the procedure, with offenders who refuse facing an additional three to five years in jail.
The option was presented to the Leesville resident after a mother discovered him sexually abusing her daughter in February 2023, reported KPLC-TV.
Upon being caught in the act, he used a firearm to flee, before being arrested in Houston, Texas, and subsequently returned to face his charges.
On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty in Vernon Parish to attempted first-degree rape of a child under the age of 13.
“This is a horrific crime that never should have happened,” Vernon Parish District Attorney Terry Lambright told the press.
“Thomas McCartney is a predator that needs to be locked away from others in our community.”
The serial offender has a history of convictions, including attempted aggravated sexual assault in 2011.
In the year prior, he was detained on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a 12 year old.
Back in 2006, he was apprehended on one count of felony carnal knowledge of another girl.
